Women’s Narratives: Brick City Blues is an ode to, a celebration, a challenge and a questioning of women’s narratives in the context of a racial, socioeconomic and political paradigm shift of the body. This exhibition pivots on the notion of the artist’s inner voice, sociopolitical stance and metamorphosis in concept, material and technique.
The redefinition of women, their bodies, spaces and the world they inhabit in the context of today’s art makers is the focal point of this exhibition narrative throughout the work of an inter-generational group of diverse artists. Women’s Narratives suggests that art is an idea, concept and object, that thing to look at, that thing to acquire and own, and that thing to share ideas and manifestations. It is produced by, for and about women, the context of who, what, and why can be debated but the exhibition is juxtaposition of self and individual, with group and society using Newark as the literary canvas, the forefront, intermediary and background. It is in part about poetry of the body, portraiture and jazz.
